Engineer II or III - Substation Application
SUMMARY
Mortenson is currently seeking a Engineer II or III - Substation Application that will provide technical leadership and application-level engineering support for substation projects during pursuit, early design, estimating, and third-party review phases. This role bridges conceptual design and execution by developing preliminary substation designs, evaluating technical risks, supporting equipment selection, and advising project teams and clients on substation scope, constructability, and cost drivers.
This position offers opportunities at both levels 2 and 3, allowing candidates to apply based on their experience and qualifications. Compensation for this role is determined based on factors such as experience and location.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Develop preliminary substation layouts, one-lines, and equipment concepts to support pursuits and estimating.
Apply broad knowledge of physical, P&C, grounding, insulation coordination, AC/DC systems, and equipment ratings.
Support equipment selection strategies in coordination with Supply Chain and discipline engineers.
Perform high-level technical reviews of third-party engineering packages.
Partner with estimating and project development teams to define engineering assumptions and risks.
Support development of technical narratives and proposal exhibits.
Provide input on constructability, modularization, and execution strategies.
Coordinate application-level engineering across physical, P&C, civil/structural, SCADA, and studies disciplines.
Serve as a technical liaison with clients, utilities, vendors, and external engineers.
Mentor junior engineers and interns in substation application engineering fundamentals.
Lead technical reviews and internal alignment for complex pursuits.
Contribute to standardization, lessons learned, and continuous improvement efforts.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Engineer II Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline
2+ years of experience in a similar role
EIT/FE (preferred)
Engineer III Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline
4+ years of experience in a similar role
Professional Engineering (PE) certification
The base pay range for this role is $84,100 – $133,300. (Actual range is higher for the following office locations: Denver, CO and Chicago, IL – 5%, Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR – 10%, Washington, D.C. – 12.5%).
Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience, with consideration given to internal equity.
