Engineer III - Power Studies and Design

SUMMARY

Mortenson is currently seeking an experienced Engineer III – Power Studies and Design, responsible for a broad range of detailed engineering designs for high voltage substation, collection, and transmission projects for utility scale generation projects (Wind, Solar, Storage, etc.) You will be responsible for working closely with other engineering and design team members to coordinate the overall design package and requirements. The main focus of this position will be Power Studies - including: Short Circuit, Reactive Power and Losses using software PSSE, and Arc Flash using ETAP. This role includes performing the studies and performing quality control on other’s work.

 

Locations: Minneapolis, MN, Fargo, ND, San Antonio, TX, and Denver, CO

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for working closely with other engineering and design team members to coordinate the overall design package and requirements
  • Evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria by using judgment in making adaptations and modifications and providing interpretations and conclusions with support from other Engineers
  • Interface and present to multiple stakeholders (e.g. customer decision-makers, project teams, etc.)
  • Perform data analysis and basic engineering calculations required for designs from low voltage through 500 kV substations.
  • Assist with the review and approval of equipment vendor drawings and test reports on equipment from manufacturers
  • Provide engineering support for proposals, estimating, procurement, and construction
  • Mentor, coach and develop junior team members
  • Assists higher and lower-level engineers in the completion of large complex projects
  • Support studies methodology development that shape analysis practices aligned with our customer requirements and Mortenson’s best practice standards
  • Coordinate with other engineering disciplines and Design Phase Managers to successfully deliver design projects
  • Verify that construction agrees with electrical engineering design drawings
  • Implement the QA/QC process
  • Assist in the development and evaluation of the technical requirements for procurement and construction packages
  • Assist field personnel in resolving unanticipated site conditions
  • Experienced in electrical power engineering theories and principles
  • Experienced in researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Preferred Masters or PhD Degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) or related Engineering program
  • Strongly preferred degree is from a school of engineering with accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum
  • Professional Engineering (PE) certification
  • Ability to travel up to 10%

The base pay range for this role is $93,400 - $126,100. (Actual range is higher for the following office locations: Denver, CO and Chicago, IL – 5%, Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR – 10%, Washington, D.C. – 12.5%). 

 

Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience, with consideration given to internal equity.
