Senior Sustainability Specialist

Mortenson is currently seeking a Senior Sustainability Specialist that will be responsible for greenhouse gas emissions inventory management and leveraging this data to inform and shape strategic planning and actionable steps, ensuring that sustainability strategy and objectives are data-driven and impactful. In addition, this position will mentor and educate team members about sustainability, influence decisions that advance Mortenson’s sustainability goals and ensure alignment with industry standards and emerging trends. 

 

RESPONSIBILITES

  • Data Collection & Analysis: Develop and implement processes for collecting sustainability-related data across operations, procurement, supply chain, and product usage, focusing first on scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions data. Apply appropriate calculation methodologies and standards, such as the GHG Protocol, to ensure accuracy and consistency. 

  • Reporting & Compliance: Prepare comprehensive internal and external sustainability reports, again, primarily scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions data disclosures. Collaborate with accounting team and external auditors to verify data integrity and compliance with regulatory requirements. May also include support in answering pre-qualification requests from customers, ESG disclosures, and climate financial risk disclosure 

  • Strategy & Target Setting: Design and execute emission reduction strategies that align with Mortenson’s sustainability objectives. Set and track progress toward targets and support the identification and implementation of innovative decarbonization pathways. 

  • Software & Tools: Lead the transition from traditional spreadsheets to advanced carbon accounting software solutions. Leverage tools for real-time monitoring, forecasting, and enhanced reporting efficiency. 

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with teams across Operations, Procurement, Finance, Accounting, and others to embed sustainability considerations into business processes and decision-making. 

  • Climate Risk: May support climate risk assessments focused on both mitigation and adaptation, providing actionable insights to support strategic business decisions and resilience planning.

  • May support the implementation and administration of sustainability program at company, operating group, and project level(s).   

  • Demonstrated expertise in sustainability, with a particular focus on scope 1, 2, and 3 inventory management. 

  • Strong track record of collaboration within cross-functional teams. 

  • Proven leadership and mentoring abilities. 

  • Advanced competencies in data analysis and reporting. 

  • Exceptional communication skills and strategic thinking capabilities. 

  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 50%.  

    All other duties as assigned. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred in Sustainability, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field. 

  • Preferred five plus years of experience in sustainability roles, preferably in construction or infrastructure. 

  • Proven experience with emissions inventory and sustainability reporting 

  • Valid driver’s license

The base pay range for this role is $99,000 MIN - $148,600 MAX. (Actual range is higher for the following office locations: Denver, CO and Chicago, IL – 5%, Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR – 10%, Washington, D.C. – 12.5%). 

  

Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience, with consideration given to internal equity.  This position is eligible for Mortenson’s incentive plan.
