Mortenson is currently seeking Minneapolis-based Solar Design Engineer I or II to join our Solar group specializing in civil, geotechnical, and tracker foundation design to join our Solar Group. This position focuses on earthwork analysis and tracker foundation design during the preconstruction/ design phase of solar projects. In this role, you will create, implement, manage and continually improve our grading strategies, stormwater management design, and tracker pile designs, collaborating closely with internal teams and external partners.
Location: Minnesota- Headquarters (hybrid)
Travel: Minimal up to 10%
Responsibilities
Review owner-supplied documents (e.g. geotechnical reports, pull testing, tracker reactions, and scopes of work) and apply findings to civil and structural designs
Validate topographic elevation data and lead efforts to ensure its accuracy
Perform site grading and stormwater management design using terrain data
Coordinate tracker pile projection height design with respect to racking design criteria, clearance requirements, grading, hydrology, and topographic survey
Utilize site specific wind and corrosion studies to optimize piles for estimate
Contribute to the development of 30% construction documents in-house
Participate and/or lead design reviews of civil, geotechnical and structural design submittals
Review civil, geotechnical and structural designs to ensure compliance with owner requirements and industry standards
Collaborate with Estimating, Design Phase, Operations and Category Management teams
Promote designs that are optimized for performance, quality, safety and overall cost efficiency
Continually learn what the new solar industry trends are and become a subject matter expert
Attend solar industry conferences and other forums
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in civil, structural, geotechnical or mechanical engineering or related field
Minimum 1 year of experience in civil, geotechnical or structural engineering preferred
Solar and renewables experience preferred
Proficiency with AutoCAD, Civil3D and/or ArcGIS or related design software
Experience with LPILE preferred
Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint
Coding experience in Python preferred
Creative thinker with a proactive, solution-oriented mindset
Solar Design Engineer I
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related field
Working knowledge of NEC code and NFPA standards a plus
Basic understanding of construction techniques and project management practices
The base pay range for this role is $80,900 - $109,300
Solar Design Engineer II
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or other related field
Minimum two years in Solar PV construction management or system design, preferably utility scale
Working knowledge of NEC code and NFPA standards a plus
Basic understanding of construction techniques and project management practices
The base pay range for this role is $91,700 - $123,800
(Actual range is higher for the following office locations: Denver, CO and Chicago, IL – 5%, Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR – 10%, Washington, D.C. – 12.5%).
Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience, with consideration given to internal equity. This position is eligible for Mortenson’s incentive plan.
