Setting new standards across the industry and the state of Washington, Western Washington University is delivering the state’s first publicly funded zero-energy academic building on a campus. Featuring mass timber, the state-of-the-art building offers a ‘living laboratory approach’ and biophilic design. 

Mortenson partnered closely with Western Washington University to bring their vision to life, ensuring the facility met the International Living Future Institute’s Zero Carbon and Zero Energy Certification goals while staying within budget and maintaining the educational program space.

The Beam on Farmer® is Arizona's first cross-laminated timber (CLT) office, developed and built by Mortenson. This 184,000-square-foot space sets a new workplace standard, providing a healthy, functional and sustainable work environment.

Using CLT reduced the building's carbon footprint by more than 10% in contrast to concrete structures. Additionally, CLT is a renewable resource; it only takes an estimated 15 minutes for U.S. and Canadian forests to grow the amount of wood used on the facility.

Like many public projects, the Minneapolis Public Service Building presented many unique challenges. The City of Minneapolis wanted to create a centralized campus, downtown – with lofty sustainability goals in tow. By engaging early in capital planning, Mortenson was able to partner with key stakeholders to drive consensus on an aligned vision and provide the owner with data to make better decisions earlier. The new facility improves access to services for the community and achieves their goals – all while driving down operational costs. 

The state-of-the-art facility was designed with adaptability in mind to maximize flexibility for wherever science may take particle physics over the next 50 years. 

Providing unique solutions to this intricate program, Mortenson advanced Fermilab’s vision. Among many of the different strategies implemented, in order to meet the high design standards for this project, the team coordinated with an assigned science liaison to make sure that the building was translating to the research that would happen in this facility.
