Situated in the vibrant Old East Dallas neighborhood, this groundbreaking zero-emission vehicle charging depot was successfully brought online despite numerous site-specific challenges. Mortenson provided general contractor services for this project, which was designed to support the growing demand for zero-emission rideshare vehicles and autonomous charging of zero-emission vehicles. Construction began in the third quarter of 2024, with the ambitious goal of completion by the end of the second quarter 2025.
Our scope of work included comprehensive electrical underground installations, street utility tie-ins, and the construction of charger and equipment pads. This site involved the installation of 15 dual-port, high-efficiency 180 kW DC Zerova fast chargers to support simultaneous charging for 30 vehicles. A protective overhead canopy covers the electric vehicle charging and parking stalls. Additionally, Mortenson constructed an onsite operations building, security fencing, and integrated access controls system. This proactive system management, combined with a dedicated maintenance team, ensures maximum uptime and is essential for maintaining the safety and functionality of the site.
Mortenson worked closely with Voltera and AHJs to overcome the unforeseen challenges of building a complex electrical project on a brownfield site in a busy, urban setting. During the initial investigation, the team encountered significant existing underground infrastructure and poor soil conditions, which necessitated careful planning and execution to ensure the project's safety and success.
The project required two electrical services and a significant overhead power relocation to support widening the sidewalk and alley, aligning with the end users' specifications and new city requirements.
This project underscores Mortenson’s commitment to advancing sustainable transportation infrastructure. By providing state-of-the-art facilities for electric and autonomous vehicles, we contribute to a cleaner, more efficient future for urban transportation. Our work in Dallas is a testament to our ability to overcome complex challenges and deliver high-quality results that meet the evolving needs of our customers and the communities we serve.
