A critical access hospital marks a transformative leap forward in rural healthcare. For over 90 years, the original Tri-County Health Care facility (now CentraCare) served the region—but could no longer meet the community’s evolving needs. Designed for the future, this new facility delivers advanced technologies, expanded services, and a best-in-class patient experience that will serve the region for generations to come.
Strategically located along the highway for visibility and accessibility, the 120,000-square-foot, one-story facility is a modern healing space that consolidates nearly all patient services under one roof. It features:
The project overcame significant hurdles, including a pandemic that disrupted the design phase. Astera Health paused efforts to prioritize patient care, then resumed planning with an eye toward future resilience—incorporating design elements to support infection control and adaptability for future pandemics.
To maintain construction momentum during one of Minnesota’s coldest winters, the team employed prefabricated wall systems and panelized construction methods. Despite extreme weather and material delays (e.g., switchgear and curtainwall systems), the project stayed on track through strategic procurement and team collaboration.
In a rural setting, finding skilled labor can be challenging. The project team made intentional efforts to involve local subcontractors through outreach, while also minimizing on-site labor needs by leveraging prefabricated MEP systems and components—ensuring both speed and quality in construction.
Critical funding for the project was secured through the USDA’s Rural Development Loan and Grant program—designed to boost employment and improve services in rural areas. This support, combined with deep collaboration among public and private partners, made the vision a reality.
