The Business Academy: Empowering Local Entrepreneurs in Dekalb, Illinois

In Dekalb, Illinois, a transformative initiative is making a lasting impact on the local business community. The Business Academy is a program designed to assist low-income residents in establishing and growing their businesses through training, mentoring and connections, and also provides access to critical funding and resources. By offering financial assistance and strategic guidance, the Academy helps entrepreneurs develop sustainable business practices and move away from less desirable, short-term operations.

Many participants in the program have faced significant life challenges but remain determined to create a brighter future for themselves and their families. Through the Academy, they gain the tools necessary to build self-sustaining businesses, contributing to the economic vitality of the community.

The program was launched as part of a broader community impact initiative, supported by Mortenson and its longtime data center customer in the region. Kathy Johnson, workforce development manager at Mortenson, played a pivotal role in the creation of the Business Academy. As a member of the advisory committee, she was instrumental in securing the initial funding. “The Academy offered an opportunity for local leadership to provide funding to support small businesses in the community and become self-sustaining business owners,” says Johnson.

The idea for the Business Academy stemmed from the realization that many small businesses in the area lacked access to essential funding. Without financial support, some operated informally, struggling to gain legitimacy. The Academy was established as a solution to this problem, offering these businesses a pathway to secure funding, formalize their operations, and integrate into the local economy.

Mortenson was the first major company to invest in the initiative, making an initial contribution of $25,000 in 2023. Shortly after, the City of Dekalb contributed an additional $100,000, allowing the program to expand its reach. As funding continued to grow, the Academy was able to launch its first official cohort in October 2024 following a rigorous selection process.

Beyond financial assistance, the Business Academy provides entrepreneurs with essential business development resources. Participants receive support in grant writing, business strategy formulation, business plan development, budgeting, and logistical assistance in finding appropriate commercial spaces. This holistic approach ensures that new business owners are equipped with the knowledge and tools necessary to thrive.

The Business Academy is more than just a funding initiative—it is a catalyst for economic empowerment in Dekalb. By helping small businesses secure legitimacy and sustainability, the program strengthens the local economy and fosters a community of resilient entrepreneurs ready to shape the future of business in the region.
