What construction can happen to connect medical facilities underground?

The BloodCenter of Wisconsin completed an $11.5 million addition/renovation project to their Blood Research Institute facility in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. The 53,700 GSF project, located on the Milwaukee Regional Medical Campus, included a new research lab addition, an underground connector, and renovations to the existing facility.

The new 35,000 SF addition houses state-of-the-art research laboratory space, offices, conference areas, and mechanical space. Taking advantage of ample natural light, the addition was constructed with a beautiful glass atrium, clerestory lighting, and skylights.

The project also included 17,000 SF of renovations to the existing facility’s donor site, office areas, conference rooms, and library. Great care was taken to ensure a seamless appearance from the existing building to the new addition.

Also included in the project was the construction of a 1,700 SF underground connector that connects the existing facility to the neighboring Medical College of Wisconsin. Sitework, including a lush garden courtyard as well as additional parking, was also completed.
