Modernization of Southeast Poultry Research Lab

What does the design-build of a research lab include?

The design-build Modernization of the Southeast Poultry Research Laboratory (SEPRL) project for the USDA involved the full redevelopment of an agricultural research campus in Athens, GA, and included the demolition of 24 buildings totaling approximately 69,000 SF, the construction of three new laboratory buildings, and the renovation/addition of a hatchery building (B43). The project scope encompassed a total of 246,787 SF of construction on a 30-acre site. Designed for biosafety, functionality, and flexibility, the three new laboratory buildings (B45, B46, and B47) provide state-of-the-art laboratory space to accommodate a wide range of biosafety levels, including BSL-3AG, BSL-3E, ABSL-3E, BSL-2 and ABSL-2. This project transformed an aging campus with numerous small, outdated buildings into a modern research complex with fewer larger and more efficient buildings, and a significantly upgraded site infrastructure.

The project also had significant scopes of site work, including the replacement of all existing utility infrastructure for the SEPRL campus. This infrastructure work provided new sanitary sewer systems, storm sewer and water detention basins, water and fire water mains, natural gas, steam piping, underground and overhead power, and fiber optic lines. Other site work involved exterior lighting, concrete and asphalt paving, curb and gutter, surface parking lot, sidewalks, landscaping, and signage.
