The Sagebrush B Energy Storage Project is a 100 MW / 400 MWh energy storage facility located in Kern County, California. The project utilizes Gen3 PE Inverters and BYD MC10 energy storage system technology, representing one of the earliest largescale deployments of this equipment combination. Mortenson was the full engineering, procurement, and construction contractor for the project.
Situated adjacent to the Sagebrush A Energy Storage Project, Sagebrush B sits within existing wind generation assets. Wind turbines remain in operation immediately surrounding the project site, making the area a long‑standing hub of renewable energy infrastructure. The new facility interconnects directly into the Southern California Edison (SCE) grid system, supporting regional energy reliability and renewable integration.
The project team navigated a variety of evolving circumstances, including an acceleration request that required rephasing the entire project schedule and the complexity of commissioning two subprojects serving two separate off-takers. As one of the first Mortenson projects with Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) compliance requirements, the team navigated evolving regulatory expectations while still meeting all contractual milestone dates.
It was essential for the project team to have a positive, lasting impact on the local community while the project was being built. Team members planted trees and built a community garden at Mojave Elementary School. They team also partnered with the Community Action Partnership of Kern’s Eastern Kern Family Resource Center on several initiatives including a coat and food drive, a toy drive, and a Little Free Library build and book donation.
