Western Washington University Carver Academic Renovation / Western Washington University, WA
What does it look like to do a major renovation on an active college campus?
This $60 million Carver Academic Renovation and Addition was completed in time for June 2017 graduation at Western Washington University. WWU is currently using the facility for summer athletic camps while Mortenson completes the finishing touches. WWU plans to complete occupancy activities and has the facility in full operation for the Fall quarter. The project includes 86,000 square feet of expansion to support learning, teaching, and athletic excellence. The shells of the vintage 1935 and iconic 1959 gymnasium structures have been preserved and have been completely overhauled to include substantial seismic upgrades and all new services. It includes basketball courts, seismic upgrades, MEP upgrades, locker rooms, student gathering space, and offices. A unique feature for this project includes two truss pieces, one interior and one exterior, each piece weighing 37,000 pounds. The interior truss was slid into the existing structure on five custom engineering carts and then picked by crane through the roof and raised into place. The project will submit for and expects to achieve LEED Gold level certification.
