PROJECT ENGAGEMENT SNAPSHOT
$7B INDUSTRIAL MANUFACTURER
The Need
A faulty machine used to make molten iron unexpectedly ignited a fire at a $7B manufacturer’s industrial foundry, which spread and destroyed areas of the facility. This resulted in a loss of $100,000 per day due to the halt in production of their cast iron operations. Company leaders called Mortenson, due to our historical relationship, to manage the repair process and add new infrastructure.
The Solution
The foundry is critical to business operations because it produces over one million iron castings annually for key customers in the automotive, agricultural, railroad and waterworks industries. Mortenson worked around the clock to quickly replace and rebuild the space that had been structurally compromised. We prioritized revenue-generating spaces and areas that needed to be made safe for workers, so that the manufacturer could get their production operational as quickly as possible. Additionally, we utilized 3D modeling to plan the layout of equipment and MEP systems, which made the design more reliable and increased efficiency.
The Result
After the key components of their production processes were up and running, we repaired other areas of the facility. Due to the success of the foundry repairs, the manufacturer asked Mortenson to continue working on campus to upgrade other production support systems.
