Lead Surveyor I - Civil

SUMMARY  

Responsible for planning, coordinating, and supporting survey activities across assigned projects and supporting group-level needs, including design phase coordination, preconstruction/site setup, survey technology coordination, drone operations, documentation, quality support, and mentorship of survey team members.

RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Coordinate design phase survey  planning, including control point layout, engineer of record (EOR)/third-party surveyor coordination, coordinate system validation, early project communication, existing grad (EG) topographic/drone coordination, kickoff meetings, and site visits.

  • Support preconstruction and site setup activities, including site visits, connectivity surveys, equipment coordination, calibration audits, control point confirmation, virtual design and construction (VDC) coordination, and handoff to superintendents and craft surveyors.

  • Support WorksManager site set-up and ongoing maintenance, SIM card activation, equipment tracking, and auditing daily system rechecks.

  • Serve as a primary drone resource, including flight operations, Propeller project site creation, data upload/processing, pilot training, flight planning, and troubleshooting.

  • Develop and maintain survey documentation, best practices, site-specific survey integrated work plans (IWPs) for complex projects, and check-in documentation with Senior and Craft Surveyors.

  • Coordinate survey-related meetings and training, including customer service leadership (CSL) meetings, craft survey meetings, annual Survey Summit, and machine control training.

  • Keep up to date technically, including exploring and evaluating new technologies and maintaining relationships with key vendors. 

  • Support utility installation activities through accurately staking offsets, pipe alignments, and structure layout.

  • Accurately capture installed utilities through timely as-builts of pipe rim, invert, flared end, top of pipe, utility structures, etc. 

  • Ability to read project plans, specifically those related to utility installation

  • Promote safety, quality, teamwork, and professional customer service consistent with Mortenson’s values and policies in all stakeholder interactions.

  • Effectively work and build relationships with those of diverse backgrounds and organizational levels. 

  • All other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to travel up to 100%.

 

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in related/applicable field or equivalent experience as a surveyor within the construction industry.

  • Minimum five years of previous survey experience.

  • Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license not required.

  • Current driver’s license.

The base pay range for this role is $98,800 MIN - $133,300 MAX. (Actual range is higher for the following office locations: Denver, CO and Chicago, IL – 5%, Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR – 10%, Washington, D.C. – 12.5%). 

  

Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience, with consideration given to internal equity.  This position is eligible for Mortenson’s incentive plan.
