SUMMARY
Mortenson is currently seeking a Senior Accountant to support the accounting and financial reporting activities of its real estate development and investment businesses. This role will perform investment and corporate accounting, financial reporting, technical accounting research, audit and tax coordination, and process-improvement activities. The Senior Accountant will partner with internal and external stakeholders to deliver accurate, timely, and reliable financial information while maintaining strong internal controls and supporting continuous improvement across MDI Accounting Operations.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close activities, including journal entries, account analyses, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
- Support accounting and reporting for assigned investments, joint ventures, wholly owned entities, and managed assets.
- Review financial information provided by property managers, investigate significant variances, and communicate relevant findings.
- Monitor and maintain schedules related to investments, ownership interests, capital activity, financing arrangements, and intercompany accounts.
- Research complex transactions and document appropriate accounting conclusions in accordance with US GAAP and internal policies.
- Coordinate with external auditors and tax advisors, including preparing workpapers, supporting analyses, and responses to information requests.
- Collaborate with lenders, investors, property managers, joint venture partners, and other internal and external stakeholders on accounting adjustments, transactions processing, and reporting.
- Review selected accounting work and provide technical guidance and constructive feedback to other accounting team members.
- Maintain effective internal controls, accounting procedures, and supporting documentation.
- Identify and implement opportunities to improve processes, strengthen reporting, and reduce manual effort.
- Support acquisitions, dispositions, refinancings, restructurings, and other special projects, as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and proficiency with Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.
- Strong general ledger and financial-system skills.
- CPA designation strongly preferred.
- Public accounting and private-industry experience preferred.
- Experience with technical accounting, tax coordination, and reviewing the work of other accounting professionals preferred.
- Experience with partnerships, joint ventures, investments, real estate, construction, or private-company clients preferred.
- Experience working with external auditors, tax advisors, lenders, investors, property managers, or joint venture partners preferred.
- Experience with Oracle Cloud Financials, Oracle Projects, or another enterprise general ledger system preferred.
- Strong knowledge of US GAAP, accounting best practices, financial reporting, and internal controls.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the initiative to research issues and improve processes.
- Ability to analyze complex accounting matters and communicate conclusions clearly to varied audiences.
- Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills.
- Strong organizational, time-management, and attention-to-detail skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver accurate, complete, and timely work.
- Sound judgment and the ability to work independently while appropriately elevating issues.

The base pay range for this role is $85,300 - $128,000. (Actual range is higher for the following office locations: Denver, CO and Chicago, IL – 5%, Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR – 10%, Washington, D.C. – 12.5%). This position is eligible for Mortenson’s incentive plan.
Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience, with consideration given to internal equity.
