Senior Strategic Intelligence Analyst

Minneapolis, MN, United States | HQ Business Support

SUMMARY

Mortenson is seeking a Senior Strategic Intelligence Analyst to join our Market Intelligence team. This is a research-intensive role for someone who enjoys digging into complex business questions, finding and evaluating information from many different sources, and turning that research into clear, compelling insights for senior leaders.

Desk research is at the heart of this position. You will investigate industries, markets, competitors, economic conditions, and emerging trends using public and subscription-based data, industry research, company information, news sources, and internal resources. You will determine what information is credible, what the evidence collectively says, and what matters for the business.

You will synthesize quantitative and qualitative information, develop well-supported points of view, and translate complex topics into concise executive reports, briefings, and presentations. This is a strategic intelligence role centered on research, analysis, synthesis, and business writing, not dashboard development or primary market research.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Research and Analysis

  • Conduct in-depth desk research on industries, geographic markets, competitors, economic conditions, customers, and emerging business trends.

  • Find, evaluate, and synthesize quantitative and qualitative information from multiple credible sources.

  • Investigate ambiguous business questions, determine what information is needed, and develop clear, evidence-based conclusions.

  • Identify important trends, market shifts, risks, and opportunities and assess their implications for the business.

  • Develop deep knowledge of select markets, industries, competitors, and strategic topics through ongoing research and monitoring.

Strategic Intelligence and Executive Communications

  • Author market intelligence reports, executive briefings, market and sector outlooks, competitive analyses, and other strategic intelligence deliverables.

  • Turn extensive research and analysis into concise narratives that explain what is happening, why it matters, and what could happen next.

  • Combine narrative, data, charts, and exhibits to communicate complex topics simply and accurately.

  • Develop clear points of view while distinguishing evidence, interpretation, and implications.

  • Apply strong business judgment to surface the findings most relevant to senior leaders and strategic decisions.

Market and Competitive Intelligence

  • Analyze competitor strategies, capabilities, positioning, investments, and market activity to identify meaningful changes in the competitive landscape.

  • Monitor economic, construction, customer, and industry developments and connect external events to potential business implications.

  • Serve as an intelligence lead for select markets or strategic topics, developing expertise and maintaining an ongoing point of view.

  • Support business planning, growth strategy, market prioritization, and other strategic decisions with fact-based analysis.

  • Use AI and emerging research tools thoughtfully to accelerate research and synthesis while independently evaluating sources and conclusions.

You may be a good fit for this role if you enjoy digging into unfamiliar industries and business questions, finding credible evidence, connecting ideas across sources, and developing a point of view. You are as comfortable interpreting a chart or dataset as you are writing a clear executive narrative, and you take pride in turning complicated research into something a senior leader can understand quickly.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Economics, Finance, Strategy, Journalism, Public Policy, Real Estate, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.

  • Minimum seven years of experience in market intelligence, competitive intelligence, economic or industry research, strategy, consulting, or another analytically rigorous research environment.

  • Experience in nonresidential construction, commercial real estate, infrastructure, industrial markets, or another asset-intensive B2B industry strongly preferred

  • Demonstrated experience conducting complex business or industry research and developing clear, evidence-based conclusions.

  • Exceptional business writing and synthesis skills, including the ability to turn extensive research into concise executive narratives.

  • Strong business judgment and ability to distinguish an interesting fact from an insight that could influence a decision.

  • Strong quantitative literacy and ability to interpret market, economic, financial, and industry data.
