Advocate Good Shepherd New Patient Care Tower and Modernization / BarringtonIL
3-year renovation and expansion sequenced into 26 phases to ensure no disruption in patient care.

The Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital Modernization Project included a new patient care tower and back-fill renovations for the inpatient Operating Room suite, Radiology, Prep/Hold Unit, Sterile Processing Department, Cath/EP/IR, Cardio Diagnostics, and Cardiac Rehab Center. The tower houses 120 private rooms across four floors: 24 beds in the ICU and 32 beds on each of the three floors of the Med/Surgical Unit. Public and support spaces and storage and mechanical space are also included. Most importantly, the new tower has elevated the look and function of the hospital, supporting AGSH's high standards of quality and safety. The project also included an enhanced main entrance to improve traffic flow and patient way-finding.

The team of Advocate, HOK, and Mortenson took part in LEAN operational planning exercises prior to the start of schematic design. The goal was to streamline each department's operations, thus right-sizing the project in terms of square footage and cost. In all areas studied, the team was able to reduce the size of the master plan and provide more scope than anticipated within the customer's target budget.

In early workshops, the team discovered the potential to push the boundaries of technology and integrated delivery with the AGSH patient care tower. The team coordinated the alignment of an energy model simultaneously with the 3D model. This allowed the team to show AGSH and stakeholders the money-saving potential of different building systems.
