Lars Carlson is a dedicated professional with over 30 years of experience in the construction industry, most of which have been with Mortenson. His passion for building was evident from a young age, with childhood memories filled with hammers and nails—foreshadowing his lifelong dedication to construction.
A graduate of the University of Washington with a Bachelor of Science in Construction Management, Lars is a seasoned project planning expert with a wealth of experience across various high-profile and complex projects. His diverse background includes roles as an estimator, project manager, scheduler, and now superintendent, giving him a unique and comprehensive perspective on the preconstruction process.
Over the years, Lars has cultivated a robust skill set that includes team leadership, advanced project scheduling, problem-solving, disruption avoidance, and effective communication with clients, designers, and trade partners. He excels in planning and executing work, leveraging his broad experience to drive successful project outcomes. Lars’s expertise extends beyond project execution to influencing the design phase with a builder’s perspective, ensuring safe, high-quality, and efficient building processes. His commitment to excellence transcends the construction site, as he actively engages in continuous learning and professional development to stay current with industry trends and innovations.
Lars derives great satisfaction from collaborating with trade partners and designers to tackle complex projects. His leadership shines through in his management of landmark projects such as the Climate Pledge Arena, a $1 billion carbon-neutral facility in Seattle, Washington and Kaiser Borsari Hall at Western Washington University, the state’s first publicly funded zero-energy academic building on a university campus.
His vision for the industry includes embracing sustainable practices and innovative technologies to enhance project outcomes and contribute positively to communities. As the industry evolves, Lars remains committed to fostering a culture of safety, quality, and collaboration, ensuring that every project not only meets but exceeds expectations.
Looking to the future, Lars is particularly excited about the prospect of his daughter joining the construction industry, potentially at Mortenson, after completing her Construction Management degree. Outside of work, Lars enjoys restoring classic cars and showcasing them at car shows. His hobbies include camping, fishing, hunting, and other outdoor activities.
