The UW Art and Music Renovation – Phase II project delivers a comprehensive interior renovation of the key performance space within the University of Washington’s School of Music in Seattle, Washington. This higher education renovation focuses on modernizing critical building systems and enhancing the overall user experience while maintaining continuous building operations. As the facility remains open during construction, except for the auditorium, which is undergoing reconstruction, the project requires careful phasing, detailed coordination, and close collaboration with the University to minimize disruption to academic programs.
At the heart of the project is the renovation of the 175-seat Brechemin Auditorium located on the first floor. This major upgrade includes significant ADA accessibility improvements to ensure inclusive access for performers and audience members alike. Acoustic upgrades will enhance sound quality and performance capabilities, while modernized mechanical, electrical, lighting, and audiovisual systems will support contemporary teaching and performance needs. Selective structural modifications are also included, including seismic reinforcement to improve life safety and align the space with current standards.
This project will be delivered using the GC/CM delivery method, with construction scheduled to begin in June 2026 and conclude in March 2027. Sustainability considerations include selective material salvage, mechanical system upgrades, and thoughtful finish material selections, along with additional measures that reflect Mortenson’s pledge to the Contractor’s Commitment for sustainable construction practices.
