Nathan Riggs
Director of Design Phase Management | Power Delivery
Throughout his nearly 20-year tenure in the construction industry, Nathan has played an integral role in some of Mortenson’s most complex energy projects in the United States and Canada that have included power delivery, HVDC, battery energy storage, wind, and solar scopes ranging from 34.5kV to 500kV.
Nathan is well-versed in the development of projects from preconstruction to construction and through to commissioning and specializes in substation, transmission line, HVDC, and underground collection system installations.
After graduating from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Nathan began his career in the construction industry as an engineer working on wind and solar projects in the field, focusing on the high voltage scopes. After four years of traveling to different project locations, he transferred to Mortenson’s Minneapolis headquarters office to support the Power Delivery group’s design phase and initial Engineering Services group efforts.
A standout moment in Nathan’s career was his key role during the pursuit and design phase of the Bipole III HVDC Converter Stations project. He lent his technical expertise in the project’s preconstruction efforts efforts both in Minneapolis and at the transformer manufacturer in Nuremberg, Germany. Once the project was under construction, he relocated to Winnipeg, Manitoba to provide on-site technical support.
Since then, Nathan has relocated back to Minneapolis where he is now the Director of Design Phase Management for the Power Delivery group, overseeing all functionality for the design phase team.
Nathan brings technical expertise and project management experience to enhance teams he leads, acting as an adept problem solver, communicator, and technical coach. He has built a resume on both strong project performance and creative pursuit work.
Nathan lives in the Minneapolis area with his wife and three young sons who keep them busy! He also enjoys woodworking and refueling by spending time outdoors camping and exploring, especially in the Boundary Waters of Minnesota.
