Estimator I & II Civil Underground Utilities

SUMMARY  

Mortenson is currently seeking an Estimator I & II – Civil Underground Utilities who will be responsible for gathering, calculating, and compiling data in order to produce project estimates; for large projects, this position will also prepare the full estimate. 

RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Develop accurate project estimates for civil and underground utility construction projects, including water, sewer, storm, duct bank and related infrastructure systems.
  • Gather, calculate, and compile cost data to prepare complete project estimates and competitive bid proposals.
  • Perform quantity takeoffs and material summaries from plans, specifications, engineering drawings, and other project documents.
  • Analyze labor, equipment, material, subcontractor, and schedule-driven costs to develop comprehensive project budgets.
  • Solicit and evaluate bids from trade partners, subcontractors, and suppliers; prepare vendor comparisons and estimate summary sheets.
  • Assist in preparing, organizing, and coordinating Request for Quote (RFQ) documents and schedules.
  • Assess site conditions, project risks, permit requirements, and regulatory factors that may impact project costs, timelines, and execution strategies.
  • Determine appropriate pricing strategies and recommend cost-effective solutions that align with project objectives and market conditions.
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, superintendents, and operations teams to validate assumptions, refine pricing, and support project pursuits.
  • Support estimate reviews, project meetings, site investigations, and preconstruction activities.
  • Maintain estimating archives, historical cost databases, production rates, and market pricing information to support future bids and continuous improvement.
  • Manage agenda, project documentation, and estimate revisions throughout the bidding process.
  • Develop relationships with new bidders and suppliers and gather qualification documentation for future project opportunities.
  • Support lead estimator in data input into estimating software program(s) 
  • May provide training to other estimators and interns 

  

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering or similar or equivalent experience  
  • (3+ years of relevant experience for the Estimator II role)
  • Construction industry experience preferred 
  • Current driver’s license 
  • Detail orientation sufficient to organize and manage multiple project tasks  
  • Applicable mathematical skills  
  • Familiarity with building/estimating techniques and software: ISqFt, ICE/Bid2Win, On-Screen Takeoff (OST), Bluebeam/PDF, Google Earth  
  • Proven positive and professional attitude, and strong customer service skills  
  • Ability to interpret and communicate Mortenson policies

  • Experience in underground utilities

     

  • (for Non-Craft & Non-Union Craft working 25+ hours / week)

The base pay range for Estimator I $78,800 MIN - $98,500 MAX, for Estimator II $91,700 - $123,800 MAX. (Actual range is higher for the following office locations: Denver, CO and Chicago, IL – 5%, Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR – 10%, Washington, D.C. – 12.5%). 

 

  

Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience, with consideration given to internal equity.  This position is eligible for Mortenson’s incentive plan.
