SUMMARY
Mortenson Properties, Inc. ("MPI") is looking to add a Senior Accountant to the team. This individual will ensure the accuracy, integrity, and timely reporting of financial information for MPI, the commercial real estate investment company of M.A. Mortenson, and its related entities. Leverage strong analytical and accounting skills to perform account reconciliations, review financial results, investigate variances, and maintain compliance with accounting standards and internal controls. Collaborate across teams to solve complex accounting issues, support strategic business decisions, and continuously improve financial processes and reporting quality. Provide support to the property accountant and assist Manager in various accounting / finance projects.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead and support month-end close activities, including the preparation and posting of journal entries, account analyses, reconciliations, and research. Identify opportunities to enhance efficiency and contribute to process improvements within the close cycle.
- Review monthly property financial reporting packages prepared by third-party management companies, including variance analyses and assessment of financial results.
- Perform development accounting activities, draw request reviews, CIP and loan accounting, account reconciliations, and supporting analyses. Assist in developing enhanced reporting and analytical tools to support financial oversight and reconciliation processes.
- Perform corporate accounting functions, including invoice review and approval, maintenance of notes receivable schedules, and reconciliation of intercompany accounts.
- Performs investment accounting activities, including recording capital contributions and distributions and maintaining ownership and capital account schedules for subsidiary entities.
- Support real estate acquisitions and dispositions through the preparation of closing prorations, journal entries, account analyses, and related accounting documentation.
- Ensure compliance with accounting policies, internal controls, and technical accounting guidance. Document, evaluate, and enhance accounting processes and workflows to support accurate financial reporting and effective controls.
- Partner with external auditors during interim and year-end audits by preparing workpapers, supporting analyses, and responding to audit requests in a timely and accurate manner.
- Perform ad hoc financial analyses and contribute to special projects that support business objectives, operational improvements, and strategic initiatives.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
- Minimum of five years of progressive accounting experience in the commercial real estate industry
- Experience accounting for multi-tiered investments preferred
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and working knowledge of Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.
- Strong computer skills, with experience in commercial real estate industry software such as MRI, Yardi, and Oracle Cloud general ledger software
- An understanding of US GAAP, accounting processes/best practices, and internal controls, especially within the real estate industry
- Strong understanding of commercial real estate operations, including lease and loan agreements, CAM reconciliations, budgeting, acquisitions, dispositions, and development accounting.
- Literacy in and deep understanding of financial statements and financial reporting
- Shown ability in meeting expectations and related deadlines; ability to work with different personalities and work styles
- Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills
- Ability to take complex accounting topics, summarize / tailor information for a specific audience, and present effectively
- Professional, business-driven mentality with the ability to communicate and interact with all levels of the organization, as well as external parties
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with initiative to seek innovative solutions and drive efficient change

The base pay range for this role is $85,300 Min - $128,000 Max. (Actual range is higher for the following office locations: Denver, CO and Chicago, IL – 5%, Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR – 10%).
Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience, with consideration given to internal equity. This position is eligible for Mortenson’s incentive plan.
