Read Erin's spotlight interview for Women in Construction Week

Erin Chin WIC Week 2022

Erin’s interest in the construction industry began when she was working for a residential homebuilder after graduating from the University of Washington. While she never would have thought she’d be working in the construction industry, her mentors guided her to a career that she has come to love. Erin joined the Mortenson team in 2008, and loves being a part of all types of projects and working with different teams. She is also passionate about serving on Mortenson’s Seattle Community Impact Team to coordinate local engagement efforts with our team members.

Interview with Allie Zimmerman, Field Engineer at Mortenson

Why construction? How did you get into the position you're currently in?

Erin: As a kid, I never thought about working in the construction industry. It wasn’t until I graduated college and started working for a residential homebuilder that my interest in construction began. I had great mentors who were willing to share their knowledge and experiences with me. After a few years, I left the residential market and joined Mortenson. The people and the company’s culture are what drew me to Mortenson. It’s been great working with project teams, and I love all the challenges each new project brings.

What do you find fulfilling about your job or this industry?

ErinI love the variety of projects and team members I get to interact with. No two projects are the same and each one brings new and interesting challenges. In my role, I am fortunate enough to interact and partner with a variety of departments. Over the years, this has helped me grow in my knowledge about construction. Plus, it’s always fun to be able to drive past a building and say my team played a part in helping build that.

What's the most valuable lesson you've learned in your career?

ErinDon’t be afraid to speak up and ask questions. I love that one of Mortenson’s Finance & Accounting’s operating principles is to “Be Curious.” I’ve learned that by asking the “why” and “why not” I am constantly learning. Throughout my career people have been willing to listen and answer my questions. Also, it is important to be yourself. Don’t pretend to be something you are not. It’s critical to stay true to your values and beliefs.

What advice would you give to women in the industry or those interested in joining?

ErinDon’t’ be afraid to try something new and go for it! My advice is to work hard and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Be confident. This is an industry with great people who want to see you succeed.
