Can new construction on campus bring practical science and formal education together?

The Science and Technology Building at Bellevue College serves as a new hub for STEM education on the college’s main campus, expanding access to science instruction for students. This three-story, 64,000-square-foot facility houses 22 modern classrooms and laboratories supporting life sciences and chemistry programs, along with faculty offices and collaboration spaces. Positioned at a prominent campus entry point, the building was designed to “put science on display,” using extensive interior and exterior glazing to showcase learning, research, and scientific discovery while inspiring curiosity among students and visitors alike.

Delivered using the GC/CM project delivery method, the project required thoughtful planning and collaboration to maintain uninterrupted campus operations throughout construction. Located at the heart of an active campus, the work included a complex 1,600-foot sewer line extension that crossed the college’s main arterial roadway while remaining adjacent to occupied buildings. Through careful coordination with the academic calendar, detailed site logistics planning, and phased construction activities, the team completed the project without any unplanned disruptions to students, faculty, or campus visitors. During a period of significant market escalation, the team also identified innovative cost-saving opportunities, including transitioning the roof structure from concrete to steel. The resulting savings were reinvested into additional interior glazing that further supported the project’s vision of making science visible and accessible.

Sustainability was a key focus throughout design and construction. Originally targeting LEED Silver certification, the project ultimately achieved LEED Gold through a combination of energy-efficient systems, water-conserving fixtures, enhanced commissioning, green power strategies, and responsible material management.
