Seattle University - A. A. Lemieux Library Expansion

The renovation and expansion of Seattle University’s historic 1966 library transformed a traditional library into a dynamic, technology-rich learning hub at the heart of campus. The project created a 129,000 square foot contemporary learning resource center through the renewal of the existing structure and the addition of a 40,000 square foot, three-story glass and brick learning commons.

Designed to support a wide range of learning styles and academic needs, the facility features active learning classrooms, student study areas, reading rooms, a media technology lab, special collections archives, classroom and training spaces, multimedia labs with a recording studio, distance learning environments, a café, and indoor and outdoor gathering spaces. The learning commons offers a diverse mix of quiet and collaborative environments that serve students, faculty, staff, and the surrounding community from early morning into the evening.

Beyond enhancing the library experience, the project strengthens connections between adjacent campus buildings, improves pedestrian circulation, and establishes a vibrant new plaza at the center of campus. The facility’s visible sustainability features, including an enhanced building thermal envelope, water-conserving plumbing fixtures, energy-efficient mechanical systems, and daylight- and occupancy-controlled lighting, contributed to LEED Gold certification. By blending historic preservation with contemporary design, the project reestablishes the library as a cornerstone of learning, collaboration, and community on campus.
