St. Anthony North Hospital Expansion Project

In response to strategic planning and patient demand, CommonSpirit Health selected Mortenson to lead the expansion of St. Anthony North Hospital in Westminster, Colorado. This project involved the construction of a new five-story, 30-bed, 105,000-square-foot patient tower, strategically positioned above the existing main entrance. This expansion is a testament to our commitment to enhancing healthcare services for the local community.

Project Highlights:

  • New Patient Tower: The completed five-story tower houses three 30-bed medical-surgical units and a 25-bed intensive care unit (ICU). The design includes infectious isolation rooms and a 30,000-square-foot cancer center, which is scheduled to open in January 2025. The hospital now has an overall capacity of 237 beds.

  • Infrastructure Enhancements: To ensure seamless access, Mortenson reworked existing roads, drive lanes, parking, and drop-off areas. A new main entry canopy and drop-off loop were constructed, alongside the relocation of utilities and a 1,200-square-foot expansion of the Central Utility Plant.

  • Interior Renovations: The project included remodeling and relocating existing interior spaces across multiple levels to expand services and create a corridor connection to the new bed tower.

  • Collaborative Design and Construction: SmithGroup and Boulder Associates co-led the planning, design, and project management, with Mortenson serving as the General Contractor. The design emphasizes patient comfort, safety, and flexibility, with rooms offering expansive mountain views.

  • Cancer Center: A new ground-floor cancer center will provide centralized medical and radiation oncology services, featuring a 12-bay infusion center, radiation therapy, and a compounding pharmacy.

Community Impact:

St. Anthony North Hospital, part of CommonSpirit Health, is a cornerstone of healthcare in the Greater Denver area. The expansion supports the hospital's mission to deliver person-centered care, emphasizing preventative health, wellness, and education. This project not only enhances the hospital's capacity but also sets a new standard for healthcare in the region.

Key Partners:

  • Design and Engineering: SmithGroup, Boulder Associates, Martin/Martin (Structural Engineer), Cator Ruma (MEP Engineer), SA Miro (Civil Engineer)

  • Owner’s Representatives: Adams Management and Med Development

This expansion is more than just a building; it symbolizes our dedication to advancing medical care and enhancing patient experiences. We are proud to have contributed to a project that will touch, heal, and improve countless lives in the community.

To maintain smooth access, Mortenson will rework the existing road, drive lanes, parking and drop-off to the main entry and Emergency Department parking lot, as well as construct a new main entry canopy and drop-off loop.

Additionally, Mortenson will relocate the existing utilities displaced due to the new patient tower location and expand the Central Utility Plant by approximately 1,200 square feet.
