Located in the heart of downtown Minneapolis, Target Center is home to the NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves and the WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx.Originally completed in 1990, it was Mortenson's first arena project and became the foundation for what is now one of the nation's leading Sports + Entertainment construction portfolios.
A unique building feature, Target Center houses one of two movable arena floors in the country. It can be fully raised or lowered in 25 minutes, allowing customized sightlines for each event. Beneath the arena is a two-story health club comprised of racquetball courts, basketball courts, weight lifting equipment, a swimming pool, and a running track.
More than 25 years after completing the original arena, Mortenson returned to transform the venue through the Target Center Renovation project. Drawing on extensive arena renovation experience, updates to the 19,000-seat arena included a new center-hung scoreboard, five new premium club spaces, improved suites, new seats throughout the arena, an upgraded sound system and digital signage, and modernized concourse areas.
Because the project included public funds, a signature new façade and glass atrium was added to increase exterior impact and public perception of the arena. The facility remained open during most of the renovation, with approximately 50 events occurring, including Timberwolves and Lynx games, concerts, and other events.
Target Center represents more than an arena. It marks the beginning of Mortenson's Sports + Entertainment journey and demonstrates how long-term partnerships, renovation expertise, and innovative venue design can extend the life and impact of iconic community destinations.
