Located in the heart of downtown Minneapolis, Target Center is home to the NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves and the WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx. It is also Mortenson’s very first arena project marking the genesis of the Sports + Entertainment group. A unique building feature, Target Center houses one of two movable arena floors in the country. It can be fully raised or lowered in 25 minutes, allowing customized sightlines for each event. Beneath the arena is a two-story health club comprised of racquetball courts, basketball courts, weight lifting equipment, a swimming pool, and a running track.
Mortenson more recently completed a major renovation that touched nearly every surface of the building—successfully transforming the arena back into a world-class venue. Updates to the 19,000-seat arena included a new center-hung scoreboard, five new premium club spaces, improved suites, new seats throughout the arena, an upgraded sound system and digital signage, and modernized concourse areas.
Because the project included public funds, a signature new façade and glass atrium was added to increase exterior impact and public perception of the arena. The facility remained open during most of the renovation, with approximately 50 events occurring, including Timberwolves and Lynx games, concerts, and other events.
