Target Center Renovation

How do you improve the experience for 1 million fans that visit your arena every year?

Project Overview

Mortenson completed a $145 million, three-phase renovation of Minneapolis’ Target Center, transforming the 19,000-seat arena back into a world-class sports and entertainment venue. The project touched nearly every surface of the building while supporting continued arena activity during most of construction.

Key Takeaways:

  • Major Arena Revitalization: The $145 million renovation transformed Target Center back into a world-class venue.
  • Arena-Wide Enhancements: Updates include a new center-hung scoreboard, new premium club spaces, improved suites, new seats throughout the arena, upgraded sound and digital signage, and modernized concourse areas.
  • Public-Facing Exterior Impact: A signature façade and glass atrium increased the arena’s exterior presence and improved public perception of the venue.
  • Active Venue Construction: The facility remained open during most of the renovation, with approximately 50 events taking place during construction.
  • Sports Group Origin Story: Target Center marked Mortenson’s first sports project when it was built in 1990, helping lead to the establishment of the company’s Sports Group.

Challenged to stay relevant in the ultra-competitive sports and entertainment landscape, Minneapolis’ Target Center is the latest arena to undergo a major revitalization. The $145 million renovation project touched nearly every surface of the building and successfully transformed the Target Center back into a world-class venue.

In addition to a new signature façade and glass atrium, updates to the 19,000 seat arena included a new center-hung scoreboard (the largest in the Upper Midwest), new premium spaces, improved suites, all-new seats, an upgraded sound system, and digital signage, and modernized concourse areas. The three-phase project began in May 2016 and was completed in October 2017.

Originally built in 1990, the Target Center was Mortenson’s inaugural sports project and led to the formation of the company’s Sports Group. It hosts approximately 200 events annually and has 1 million visitors pass through its gates each year.

I don’t know how they pulled it off. The construction team did an amazing job. I think we’d all be in agreement. The outside, the inside, the locker room, court, Lexus Club, 612 Club, it’s unbelievable.
