Mortenson delivered the Texas Solar Nova 1 & 2 solar complex in Spur, Texas, a 590 MWdc renewable energy project spanning approximately 5,000 acres. Built in two phases for Clearway Energy Group, the project adds large-scale solar generation to the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) grid while supporting major corporate decarbonization goals.

590 MWdc Solar Complex Completed in West Texas
The 590-megawatt Texas Solar Nova complex in Spur, Texas encompasses approximately 5,000 acres and utilizes over 1.1 million solar panels connected to the grid by one 138kV substation and one 168kV substation. The project, which was constructed in two phases, generates enough electricity to power more than 190,000 homes annually. Impressively, over 400 craftworkers contributed to the completion of the Texas Solar Nova complex with more than 500,000 hours of injury-free labor.
Texas Solar Nova offtake agreements will support Verizon in achieving its target to source the equivalent of fifty percent of its total annual electricity consumption with renewable energy by 2025. A portion of the renewable attributes from the solar projects will also go toward supporting SKF and Toyota Boshoku America in achieving their respective decarbonization goals through renewable energy certificate (REC) purchases.
It wasn’t all work — during construction of the Texas Solar Nova complex Mortenson and project owner, Clearway Energy Group, also had the opportunity to positively impact the local West Texas community. Mortenson and Clearway supported several local organizations including Texas Leadership Charter Academy-Secondary campus and the Spur Texas Community Food Bank, as well as organizing multiple school supply drives and fundraisers for local community parks.
