University of Minnesota Cancer & Cardiovascular Research Building

A 158,000 SF Cancer & Cardiovascular Research Building

Phase 2 of the University of Minnesota's Biomedical Discovery District consists of a 158,000 square foot Cancer & Cardiovascular Research Building (CCRB) and an addition to the 96,000 square foot Lillehei Heart Research Building. The project also includes a large vivarium that supports the entire research campus. Mortenson built the expansion of the Center for Magnetic Resonance Research as part of Phase 1.

The Biomedical Discovery District is the result of a $292 million funding program approved by the State of Minnesota, bringing together more than 1,200 scientists and researchers in state-of-the-art facilities to find cures and treatments for cancer, heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, and other conditions. As a research facility contractor on this research campus construction project, Mortenson delivered a facility built into UMN's academic medical campus, alongside projects like Fairview UMMC West Bank Inpatient Upgrades.

Research Facility Construction Experience

Mortenson drew on the same research-facility expertise it brought to the University of Minnesota Physics & Nanotechnology Building a few years later. That experience spans the country, from the Fairview Research Center in Seattle to research campuses built for healthcare and science + technology clients nationwide, reflecting Mortenson's standing as a research lab construction company with deep experience across the biomedical research sector.
