Construction is the ultimate team sport.
Building something tangible
My father was an electrician, and I was working alongside him on construction projects since I was a teenager. I always liked the feeling of building something tangible. There's something deeply satisfying about creating structures you can see and touch, knowing they'll serve communities for years to come. It's a fast-evolving industry with massive growth potential, and that combination of tradition and innovation keeps me passionate about the work we do at Mortenson. Construction is an always evolving team sport, and success comes from supporting one another and building each other up.
Driving growth to overcome obstacles
A Mortenson we approach problems with a "yes" attitude. Yes, we can make it easier, faster, better in a way that felt impossible yesterday. Due to the nature of my role, I've been involved with quite a few initiatives that transformed the way we work — from the development of the 4D model and coordination process to paperless construction document processes and augmented reality applications. You need to be able to test many scenarios and document your results if you want to be successful. Accept that setbacks and failures are part of the process. At Mortenson this relentless drive to overcome obstacles and deliver excellence is what shapes not just individual projects, but the entire industry's future.
Improving the process
During one project in my career, we faced the prospect of project cancellation due to the market crash. The project was delayed over four months, but our completion date did not change. Faced with the task of completing the same work on a shortened timeframe, I was forced to refine how the whole process works. I created automation processes and templates that are still used 16 years later. This experience represents a fundamental value at Mortenson: innovate, improve, succeed. Redefining what's possible isn't just about grand visions; sometimes it's about being adaptable enough to turn challenges into opportunities for systematic improvement.
PERSONAL PASSIONS
Community and family are important personal values. At Mortenson I see these values reflected every day through the work that we do and how we treat each other. As our organization continues to grow, the importance of our roots as a family-owned company ground everything we do. I am proud to uphold the Mortenson culture we have built at work every day.
MORTENSON MOMENT
Early in my career I took my mom, who was visiting from Poland, to a project opening ceremony. At the event David Mortenson took the time to greet us and thanked her for me working at Mortenson. That moment captured everything I love about this company — the genuine care for people and recognition that our work is part of something bigger than ourselves.
