105 MW of Solar Energy Completed in South Carolina
Mortenson completed two sister projects in South Carolina, totaling 105 MW — the 93 MWdc Jasper Solar project and 12 MWdc Ridgeland Solar project. Combined, the projects span almost 900 acres in Ridgeland, South Carolina and contain over 300,000 modules.
Connecting the solar farm to the grid was a Mortenson-built 115kV substation. Mortenson was also responsible for the 115kV dead-end riser structure point of interconnect. The full power delivery scope of work included providing and installing one 115kV vertical break manual operated switch, overhead transmission slack span, strain bus, structural steel, conduit, grounding, and concrete foundations.
Due to the location of these projects in a hurricane zone, it was necessary to allow for high-speed wind tolerances when installing the foundations. Build sequencing was also extremely important to account for the varying voltage sizes of the array and special consideration was made to the installation of medium voltage cable to accommodate wetland areas located on site.
