Builder's Day 2024 - Career Exploration Event
On September 9, 2024, Mortenson, along with other leading general contractors in Salt Lake City, hosted the second annual career exploration event for high school and college students. This event was a significant opportunity for young individuals to delve into the construction industry and explore various career paths within it.
Lexie Sills, the business development manager, expressed her enthusiasm about the event, stating, "It was inspiring to see students interact with contractors, engineers, architects, project managers, and craft workers, gaining firsthand insights into the incredible opportunities in the construction field." Her words highlighted the event's success in bridging the gap between students and industry professionals.
The event was held at the Rice-Eccles Stadium lot, located in the shadows of the University of Utah Stadium. This venue provided a spacious and accessible location for the large turnout. Over 800 students attended, engaging with representatives from 35 different companies. This high level of participation underscored the growing interest among students in the construction industry.
Students had the unique opportunity to interact with a diverse range of professionals, including contractors, engineers, architects, project managers, and craft workers. These interactions allowed students to gain valuable insights into the daily activities and responsibilities involved in the construction life cycle. They learned about the necessary education, work hours, and dedication required to succeed in this field. Additionally, students were made aware of the rewards and challenges associated with construction careers, providing them with a realistic perspective on what to expect.
One of the event's highlights was the numerous hands-on experiences available to students. They had the chance to operate the arm of a mini excavator, explore a cement truck, trolley, and other heavy equipment. These practical experiences were designed to give students a tangible feel for the work involved in construction and to spark their interest in pursuing such careers.
To conclude the day, a selection of local food trucks provided delicious options for the students, adding a festive and enjoyable atmosphere to the event. Furthermore, a generous donation of $10,000 was made to Granite Schools to support their construction education programs. This contribution demonstrated the industry's commitment to fostering the next generation of construction professionals.
Looking ahead, more details about the 2025 Builder's Day are anticipated, promising another exciting opportunity for students to explore the construction industry. This annual event continues to be a valuable platform for connecting students with industry professionals and inspiring the future workforce.
