Mortenson Delivers CHI Health Grand Island Family Health Center
Grand Island, Nebraska — Mortenson has delivered the new CHI Health Clinic Family Health Center in Grand Island, Nebraska, advancing access to comprehensive, coordinated care for communities across central Nebraska. The 40,165 squarefoot facility officially celebrated its grand opening on April 6 and brings primary care, specialty services, and essential support functions together in one centralized location—making care more convenient, efficient, and connected for patients and families.
Developed and built in close partnership with CommonSpirit Health and CHI Health, the Family Health Center represents a $30 million investment and is the first CommonSpirit (CHI) Family Health Center in Nebraska to offer full‑time specialty care. When fully staffed, the clinic is expected to support more than 500 patient visits per week and employ approximately 100 medical professionals.
Designed to support an integrated, patient focused care model, the facility consolidates services that were previously spread across multiple locations into a single destination for care. Offerings include priority care, primary care, internal medicine, and a broad range of specialty services, along with onsite lab and imaging, physical therapy, behavioral health, and space for a future retail pharmacy.
The project transformed a former agricultural site into a modern healthcare campus, with Mortenson guiding delivery from early site development through final finishes to accelerate access to care for the community. By aligning site work, building execution, and interior buildout around CommonSpirit’s operational goals, the team delivered a durable, high-quality facility designed to open sooner and perform from day one. Efficiently planned clinical spaces support coordinated care and smooth patient flow, while natural light, welcoming public areas, and a thoughtfully landscaped campus create a calm, accessible environment for patients, families, and staff.
“By bringing providers and services together under one roof, this facility removes barriers to care and creates a more seamless experience for patients,” said Steve Schieber, president of CHI Health St. Francis. “It’s a new level of convenience for the entire family—from babies to seniors.”
The single-story facility includes 49 exam rooms and five procedure rooms, with flexibility to support up to 30 providers. The building is designed to grow with the community, allowing CommonSpirit to expand services and adapt care delivery as needs evolve over time.
“The center was thoughtfully designed to be both welcoming and efficient, with patient comfort at the forefront,” said Dr. Joshua Anderson, neurosurgeon at CHI Health. “It also gives us room to grow—allowing us to bring additional specialists to Grand Island and the surrounding region.”
Beyond clinical space, the project reflects a strong connection to the community it serves. The campus includes Memorial Gardens honoring veterans, dedicated parking for active duty service members and veterans, and public areas designed to support an intuitive, calming patient experience.
Mortenson completed the facility in December 2025—seven weeks ahead of schedule—allowing CommonSpirit and CHI Health to accelerate provider move in and begin delivering expanded services to patients sooner.
“This project reflects what strong partnership can deliver,” said Brian Fitzpatrick, vice president and general manager at Mortenson. “Working alongside CommonSpirit and CHI Health, our team delivered a flexible, future ready facility that supports integrated care today while positioning the organization to continue serving this community well into the future.”
The grand opening celebration included a ribbon cutting and blessing ceremony with remarks from CommonSpirit and CHI Health leadership, providers, community partners, and Mortenson representatives, followed by tours of the new facility ahead of its opening to patients.
