Progressive Design Build

This project at the UW Medical Center – Northwest campus enhances patient care capacity while seamlessly transitioning Gamma Knife services from Harborview Medical Center. The Mortenson and Perkins&Will Progressive Design-Build team streamlined the design and construction of this project, optimizing the existing layout while prioritizing the creation of a healthy and welcoming environment and minimizing disruptions for patients, staff, and visitors.

The new Gamma Knife suite is designed to offer a calming and patient-centered experience. Upon entering the lobby, visitors are greeted by warm wood finishes and an abundance of natural light. This sense of serenity continues throughout the space, enhanced by a central skylight that brings daylight into the heart of the suite. Unlike traditional cancer treatment centers that often feel sterile and enclosed, this environment prioritizes comfort and openness. Patient exam and procedure rooms are thoughtfully designed with high-quality materials and ample space to accommodate family members and support staff. The use of PVC-free and non-vinyl options whenever possible created a space that is safe, durable, and environmentally friendly. Staff areas feature noise-reducing wall treatments to minimize distractions, and a new break room, located adjacent to exterior windows, provides a bright and restorative space.

The treatment room incorporates advanced technology, including integrated sound and visual systems that support clear communication between patients and caregivers. Robust security measures ensure the safe containment of Carbon-60, the radioactive isotope used in Gamma Knife procedures, in compliance with stringent safety standards.

This initiative is a collaborative effort between Mortenson and Perkins&Will, built on years of successful teamwork that enabled a smooth transition from design to construction. The project effectively addresses the complexities of highly critical facilities by seamlessly integrating advanced medical technology and requirements while reducing construction time and minimizing disruption to hospital operations.
