Fostering a culture of inclusion

As a leader and an ally at Mortenson, Brian is a firm believer that the best ideas come from welcoming a diversity of perspectives. He’s committed himself to fostering a culture of care here that focuses on awareness, advocacy and action. As the executive sponsor for Mortenson’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity Affinity group, he focuses on creating space for diverse voices, promoting mentorship, creating strategies for overcoming obstacles and building psychological safety among our team members. By consistently walking the walk when it comes to inclusivity, Brian’s efforts have helped reinforce Mortenson as a change agent in the construction industry, and build stronger, more effective project teams in the process.

Changing perceptions of construction

Brian has made it a core element of his leadership strategy to expand access to and awareness of the meaningful careers available in construction. Recognizing that talent is distributed equally, while opportunity is not, he has supported expanding the places we recruit, and in the way we work to retain and educate our workforce. He applies these lessons to his advocacy in the broader construction industry. As a board member for an Affiliate of ACE Mentor Program of America, Inc., he developed programs aimed at mentorship, internship and outreach.
